Report On Private Jet Ownership In Nigeria

Nigerians have invested about N1.3 trillion in the acquisition of private jets in the last three years, according to the Nigerian Institution of Estate Surveyors and Valuers (NIESV). The institute disclosed this in Lagos recently at an international seminar on plants and machinery valuation with focus on aircraft, oil and gas installations. The NIESV said that the number of privately-owned jets in the country has jumped from 50 in the last three years to 200.

The coordinator of the seminar, Paul Osuji, said that because of time constraints and other factors, the number of private jets would continue to be on the increase. He said that the seminar was organized to train their members on plant and machinery valuation, noting that at times, people purchase properties without knowing their real worth. According to him, professionals in Estate Surveying and Valuation are trained to value aircraft before they are paid for and brought into the country.

Osuji said that they have valued most of the private jets that are plying the Nigerian airspace “We are mandated by our profession to constantly train and retrain our members. After the last Dana Airlines crash, a lot of attention had been drawn to the aviation sector. People now want to know the airworthiness of the aircraft they want to pay for or they want to fly in. That is why we organize this seminar and most often, we bring our colleagues from other parts of the world to come and share their knowledge with us.

We are the only profession that is authorized by law to place value on any property .We are professionally trained to value properties and there is a world of difference between assessing a machinery and placing value on it. When the engineers assess a machine, what they are trying to find out is its workability. That has nothing to do with the value of the machine .It is the surveyors and valuers that have the requisite knowledge as well as the expertise to place values on items,”Osuji said.

In his opening remarks, NIESV president, Emeka Eleh, said that it is only by constant training that the members could differentiate themselves from quacks. He said if the members become proficient in their professions, when outsiders deal with them and the quacks, they would have no cause to patronize the quacks.(Source: DailySun)

Recently during projects defense organized by the Department of Physics and Astronomy, University of Nigeria, Nsukka. A 20-year-old of the department called Idoko Modestus Chijioke stunned the panel of assessors when he presented an amateur solid rocket propellant as his own project.

Chijioke’s lecturers not only marveled at his ingenuity, his supervisor, Dr. J. A. Alhassan, was so proud of him that he called on the federal government to assist the young genius to achieve the best so as to conquer his world.

The amateur rocket has PVC-pipe as the motor casing, aluminum as the nose cone, ½-inch pvc-cover, aluminum and a ½-inch diameter pipe as the nozzle. The propellant is made up of 325 grams of potassium nitrate (oxidizer) and 175 grams of sorbitol (sugar), making a total of 500 grams. The PVC-pipe is of ¾-inch diameter, and 65cm in length. The rocket motor igniter is a mixture of potassium nitrate and charcoal at 80/20 ratio, to form it into a black powder (gun powder).

Amateur rocketry is also known as experimental rocketry. The project design objective according to Chijioke and to test the workability of a potassium nitrate (oxidizer) and sorbitol (fuel) blended into a KN-SB propellant for the amateur rocket made with local materials. The rocket which was launched successfully on one of the hill-tops behind the university attained an estimated height of 35m in flight.

In a chance encounter with this reporter, Chijioke shed more light on how he came up with the idea for the project.

“I came up with this project because of a childhood dream of being a rocket scientist,” he said, “and this particularly led me into the Department of Physics and Astronomy, of UNN, to get a good grasp of the physics/science of rockets and an understanding of astronomy for which rocket is basically built”.

Asked what challenges he encountered in the course of carrying out the project, the soft spoken young man said he cannot point to any because according to him, “life is all about challenges but with focus and determination, success will surely come”.

“Some people around me thought this was not possible,” he added. “But this only made me determined to prove them wrong. The other challenges were normal in amateur rocketry as several trials were made and several failures recorded. But at last the design objective was obtained. I have dreams and tall ambitions. One of them is to be in space one day. I only pray that my dreams will get support both from government and well meaning individuals so that they will be actualized”.

In a chat with Education Review, Alhassan, his project supervisor, said that, through his project, young Chijioke has demystified science.

“The solid rocket propellant constructed by Idoko Chijioke, though an adaptation of an amateur astronomer experiments, is original. He fabricated the rocket from locally available materials from our environment. Whenever we hear of rockets, our minds by reflex action go to the technologically advanced world. Chijoke has demystified science by his effort. If he is properly motivated and equipped, he can break the ice in scientific world. There is hope for Nigeria’s national transformation if we can support and fund scientific innovations like my student has done” he said. (Source: UNN.edu)

Mr Elebuwa died in the early hours of today Wednesday December 5th in the hospital in India where he was flown to a few months ago by the Delta State government to receive treatment for an ailment. He was 65. Truly sad! May his soul rest in peace. Amen.

Man Arrested With $320,000 Cash At Lagos Airport

The Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Command of Nigeria Customs Service yesterday arrested a passenger with over $320,000 at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, about boarding a Qatar Airways flight bound for Doha, in the Gulf region.

The passenger identified as Onwuekwe  Anthony Chidi, was checking in on Qatar Airways, when he declared the money, but could not explain the source of the currency as well as show adequate proof of his business to officials of Customs at the airport.

The passenger and the money have been handed over to officials of Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, for further investigations.

According to a statement signed by the Customs Area Controller, Mr. Eporwei Charles,    “About  13.00 hours on November 19, 2012, a  passenger by name Onwuekwe Anthony Chidi, with passport number A04086671 was checking in on Qatar Airways, he declared the sum of $320,000  on both forms CDFIA and CDFIB but could not explain the source of the currency nor show adequate proof of his business to the Customs officer.”

We’ve killed Boko Haram Commander  

Joint Task Force, JTF, in Maiduguri, Borno State capital, yesterday, said it killed a Boko Haram Commander for the North-East and North-West of Maiduguri and his lieutenants, who allegedly killed General Mamman Shuwa three weeks ago.

The name of the Commander was given as Ibn Saleh Ibrahim.

A statement by JTF spokesman, Lt.-Col. Sagir Musa, said troops from the JTF, 333 Air Defence Regiment, the Department of State Security, SSS, with the support of a helicopter, conducted major offensive operations against some suspected terrorists in Nganaram, Bulabulin and Bayan Quarters in Maiduguri metropolis.

Sagir, however, said the operation was still ongoing at press time, pointing out that the late Ibn Saleh was confirmed to be responsible for the recent killing of the Nigerian Civil War hero, Gen. Mamman Shuwa through the orders of the sect’s leader Abubakar Shekau.

60 Nigerians Deported From UK Over Visa & Marriage Scam In 2012

At least 60 Nigerians resident in the United Kingdom have been deported because of various criminal offences.

We learnt that some of the deportees had contravened immigration offences.

While some were deported for their involvement in crimes such as rape, stealing, smoking and selling of hard drugs, others used fake visa or engaged in fake marriages.

Some of the deportees told PM at the airport that they had lived in the UK for long but could not get residence permit.

Narrating his experience, one of the deportees, Bathlomew Sunday, an indigene of Anambra State, southeast Nigeria, told our reporter that he lived in UK for nine years but could not get residence permit.

Sunday said he had to engage in a contract marriage to get the permit but was later caught by the British immigration, who deported him to Nigeria

He said he was not allowed to take any of his possessions before they deported him, adding that it was at the airport that he discovered other Nigerians were also deported.

Sunday explained that the British government made it difficult for immigrants, especially Nigerians, to get residence permit, saying that they didn’t plan to stay there illegally.

Another deportee, Daniel Uche, who hails from Enugu State, told PMNEWS that the global economic melt down has made it difficult to get jobs in the UK, thus many Nigerians are struggling to survive.

Uche said there are no jobs for foreigners in UK, and to survive, many engage in shady businesses.

Also, Peter Nkwocha from Delta State said he travelled to UK about seven years ago, but he was arrested and later deported because he was wrongly accused of rape.

Though he said he denied the allegation, he was arrested and later deported when the British authorities discovered he had a ‘contract’ marriage during investigation.

Sources at the immigration office confirmed the deportation and told our correspondent that the deportees are sorting themselves out in order to go back to their families. (Source:PM)

                                                                       Osaze Odemwingie, a Nigerian-born England-based striker who occasionally plays for the Nigerian Super Eagles is set for a recall by Nigeria ahead of the Africa Cup of Nations, AFCON, after quitting the football club the brought him fame.

“Osaze will be recalled to the Super Eagles after his discussions with Keshi at the weekend,” said team spokesman Ben Alaiya.

An international since 2001, Osaze established himself at the 2004 Nations Cup in Tunisia, where Nigeria placed third.

However, the West Bromwich Albion striker has not played for the Eagles since a 2013 Nations Cup qualifier in Rwanda in February and Keshi revealed last week the player has told him he has quit international football.

Osaze said he was disappointed he only played a minor role during the 2010 World Cup after playing all the qualifiers.

“He told me he has decided not to play for Nigeria anymore. He said he was unhappy with how he was treated in the national team in the past,” Keshi said.

“He said he played in all the qualifiers for the 2010 World Cup only to be dropped in the finals in South Africa. He assured me he has no problems with me as a person and he took this decision even before I took over the team.”

Nigerian Hajj Pilgrims’ Hotel Caught Fire In Makkah Saudi Arabia

On Wednesday the 31st of Oct, 2012, the hotel where over 200 Nigerian Hajj Pilgrims from Gombe were staying in Makkah, Saudi Arabia caught fire.
The fire which started from the 9th floor of a 12-storey building was extinguished few minutes after with no injuries reported.
Gombe State Hajj official, Khadi Baba Liman who confirmed the incident said the fire was caused by a female pilgrim who misused a gas cooker.
He said all the pilgrims escaped unhurt.
Another fire which broke out in another hotel in Saudi Arabia earlier this week left 13 pilgrims with minor injuries.

Osezua Osolase, a 42-year old man who was accused of using Witchcraft to silence two under-age girls whom he smuggled from Nigeria to Gravesend, UK with the aim of using them as prostitutes, has been jailed for 20 years. 

Osezua Osolase tricked the two orphans into the UK with a promise of giving them a better life.

On taking them to the Uk however, he used them as slaves and plan to transport them to Mainland, Europe to be used for prostitution business.

Osezua Elvis Osolase was convicted of trafficking and rape.

It was reported that one girl had hair cut from her armpits by a man wearing feathers, while others were slashed with knives, forced to drink potions and had blood taken with syringes to cast a spell over them.

The girls were told they would die or never bear children if they tried to escape or revealed what had happened to them.

Osolase lived in a terraced house in Gravesend, Kent, but his home was a secret staging post for vulnerable teenage orphans as they were smuggled from Africa to several European countries.

Detectives discovered evidence that at least 28 victims were smuggled in and out of Britain by Osolase over a 14-month period, earning him up to £1.5 million.

But the true figure could run into hundreds, as the pedophile was overheard by one girl boasting he had been operating for 15 years as he tried to sell her for £60,000.

Nigerian Woman Delivers Triplets In 12 Childbirths

Malama Delu Alhaji-Ali, a 46-year-old housewife of Unguwar Namanda village, Faskari Local Government Area of Katsina State, on Saturday gave birth to a set of triplets in her 12th consecutive childbirths.

News Agency of Nigeria correspondent who visited the area, reports that the woman was delivered of the triplets at the Comprehensive Health Care Centre in Faskari.

Hajia Binta Suleiman, the nursing officer in charge of the health centre’s maternity ward, told NAN on Sunday that both the mother and her three baby boys were in stable condition.

Suleiman said Delu was delivered of the babies unassisted. She said the mother had been on admission in the hospital in the last four days when officials noticed that her expected date of delivery was fast approaching.

“Delu attended regular ante-natal clinics, and she was advised to go for an ultra-scan where we noticed that she was expecting triplets,” Suleiman said.

Suleiman said the set of triplets were the first recorded in the hospital this year and urged Delu’s husband and relations as well as the local government authorities to assist her by ensuring that she had access to nutritious foods.

Meanwhile, the wife of local government caretaker committee chairman, Mrs. Sa’adatu Faskari-Ahmad, has donated some clothes and money to the mother and her babies.

Faskari-Ahmad congratulated Delu, stressing that the triplets were a rare and extraordinary blessing from Allah.

In her response, Delu expressed appreciation for the gifts and the support she received from the hospital workers.

She told NAN that the triplets came in her 12th childbirth, while all her previous 11 births were single babies.

Delu, however, recalled that before giving birth to the triplets, she experienced some abnormalities during the initial stage of the pregnancy.

She said that although the responsibility of taking care of the babies would be quite challenging for her, she would overcome the challenges with God’s support. 

Bomb Tragedy Averted At Winners Chapel In Bauchi, Suicide Bomber Arrested

 

 What might have led to another tragic suicide bombing has been averted at Living Faith Church (Winners Chapel) in Yelwa, Bauchi State after soldiers who took proactive measures arrested a fleeing suicide bomber.

On the 3rd of June 2012, a suicide bomber who rammed his car into a church killed over 20 people while 45 others sustained severe injuries.

This incident took place @ about 11am in the morning during the church service.

We learnt 2 suspected suicide bombers on a motorcycle who disguised as church members escaped security checks.

However, they ran out of luck as they plan to change their entry route, a plan which prompted suspicious security officers to run after them.

An eyewitness said the suicide bombers were compelled to change their direction since the Joint Military Task Force had alerted Church security men to placed iron barrier in order to prevent suicide bombers from gaining access to their church premises, a development which made the bomber to abandon his motor bike and take to his heels for safety.

One of the suicide bombers was caught.
In his confession, he said top religious leader in the state sent them to carry out the attack.

15-year-old girl hurled herself in front of train after footballer bragged about sex with her

Felicia Garcia, a 15-year-old student at Tottenville High School who killed herself by jumping in the path of a train was bullied to death by classmates after she had sex with four football players, police sources revealed.

The tormented Staten Island teenager was driven to her death after two 17-year-old classmates blabbed about the encounters.

Garcia’s life began spinning out of control Saturday when she went to a post-football game party and agreed to have sex with some of the players, police sources said.

On Monday, she told a girlfriend about the encounters and told her they were consensual.

“Kids are saying she had sex with some guys from the football team at a party after the game. Later on they wouldn’t leave her alone about it. They just kept bullying her and bullying her,” said one of Garcia’s friends.

After the weekend, Garcia tweeted on Monday:

 “I cant, im done, I give up.”

Garcia committed suicide at Tottenville train station in front of schoolmates

The same day she posted photographs of herself on Instagram where she appears beaten and bruised, with her lips seemingly cut or sewn together. She added the hashtag ‘beatup.’

 School officials heard of the bullying and set up a mediation session Wednesday with a counselor and one of the 17-year-old boys who denied harassing the Garcia. Leaving the office, she later ran into the other 17-year-old who had been making her life miserable — and they exchanged words, the sources said.
Police did not say what was said. But it was enough to send Garcia off to the Huguenot station of the Staten Island Railroad, where she killed herself in front of classmates.

Senior Alissa Compitello said she saw Felicia on the way to the train station and the girl told her that she had the mediation because of the bullying.

“She was smiling though, like everything was going to be okay,” said Compitello, 17.

But a quick look at Felicia’s Instagram account would have revealed the depths of her despair. On it, she placed a picture of herself with the word “Depressed” covering her eyes.

“Just because someone is smiling doesn’t make them happy,” read her caption.
Even before her suicide, Garcia’s life was marked by tragedy, the sources said. She was living with a foster family and a chronic runaway who had been reported missing seven times, they said.

Detectives are now questioning the students accused of harassing Garcia and combing through Facebook and other social media for evidence that she was bullied. They have also questioned the four varsity football players with whom Garcia had sex.

“They said at no time was the victim pressured into doing anything,” one of the police sources said.

The Board of Education has sent a crisis team to Tottenville H.S. to deal with the tragedy. Some students described a school besieged.

“I have a feeling mad s—- its gonna pop off in school tmrw,” one student Tweeted Wednesday, after news spread about the suicide.

“Everything was fine with her until she went to that football game Saturday night,” said Compitello. “We need to do something about these bullies. There is too much bullying going on in this school. We need justice.”

Sara Brager, a 16-year-old junior, said she was on the platform when Felicia handed her cell phone to a pal,walked to the edge of the platform, then fell backward into the path of an oncoming train. She said she is haunted by Garcia’s final words.

“Just before she fell, she said, ‘Finally, it’s here,’” said Brager. “It was the most horrible thing I’ve ever seen.”

Around one person in 17,000 is born with the genetic disorder, which can also cause blindness. In some African countries, particularly in East Africa, people with albinism are at risk of abduction and mutilation, as their body parts are believed by some to make potions and rituals more powerful.

“I thought I had it so tough when I was growing up, with kids making fun of me all the time. I used to come home in tears. But that’s nothing compared to what people like me go through here, particularly in rural areas,” she said.

“When I found out that in countries like Tanzania, albino people like me are at risk of having their limbs cut off for the trade in body parts I was just so shocked.

“People just like me live in fear every day of their lives. It’s terrible.”

But when it comes to international catwalks, Ms Forrest is setting a trend.

Kimmie was smitten when he saw Forrest.

“She looks so other worldly, I had to have her in the show,” he says.

“At the moment using an albino model is very hot right now, it’s true.

“But hopefully the impact of using people who look very different, is that it inspires a longer term change.”

Refilwe Modiselle, a South African model with albinism who grew up in Soweto, agrees.

Modelling since the age of 13, she is now the face of the South African fashion chain Legit and tells me albinism used to be viewed negatively but is now becoming more “mainstream”.

“I really feel that the work Diandra and I are doing is the beginning of a real change,” she says.

Quoted in the UN report, the non-governmental organisation Under the Same Sun estimated that around 71 people with albinism were killed in Tanzania between 2006 and 2012, and 31 survived machete attacks.

Seventeen albinos were murdered in Burundi, seven in Kenya seven and three in Swaziland.

The cases are often not properly reported or investigated, says Nomasonto Mazibuko from the Society for Albinism in South Africa.

But she says that change has got to come from within the continent:

“The crucial point is that people don’t take people with albinism as actual human beings. It is up to us in Africa to talk about this and make inroads against prejudice.

Her voice rises with passion as we talk: ‘We cannot be quiet, we cannot stay hidden.

“And any girl with albinism who is walking on an international catwalk or even the street with her head held high is a much needed role model.”

Modiselle hopes she can be that catalyst for inspiration for the often racially divided society in South Africa and the continent as a whole.

“I’m the symbol of racial unity. I’m a black girl who lives in the skin of a white person and that alone should embody what a human being as a whole should represent.
